Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
Neonatal-perinatal specialists at MUSC Children's Hospital provide services for term and
preterm infants requiring Level III care, which includes high-frequency ventiliation and
extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Services are also provided for healthy
newborns and Level II care for infants requiring intermediate care.
The neonatal-perinatal division oversees the High-Risk Developmental Follow-up Clinic and
the Infant Home Monitoring Program Clinic. Lactation specialists are also on hand to
provide support and education about breastfeeding.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff is comprised of a team of dedicated professionals,
including neonatologists, specially trained neonatal nurses and nurse practitioners, respiratory
therapists, radiologists, transport specialists, physical therapists, occupational
therapists, speech therapists, clinical pharmacist, nutritionist, educators and social workers.
As a result, the hospital is recognized throughout the region as the premier provider of care
for high-risk newborns.
Our Neonatal ICU has 38 intensive care beds and the Level II nursery has 20 beds. Each year
approximately 2,000 newborns are delivered at the Medical University Hospital and an additional
12,000 neonates are born within our referral area. These deliveries generate approximately 900
admissions to our intensive care nurseries. Neonatal transports account for 40% of the total
admissions to our Neonatal ICU.
