STAR Program
For Children and Adolescents ages 6-18
Stabilization of children and adolescents with severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances.
Treatment in a community and family based program that offers time limited and therapeutically intensive
clinical services. Assessment of functioning to plan and modify treatment needs. Reintegration to home,
school, and community.
Treatment and Activities
- Group Therapy - Feelings, behaviors, and problems are discussed as a group.
- Individual Intervention - One-to-one time to talk about feelings, issues, and strengths.
- Process Groups - Help identify behavior patterns and find productive ways to respond to situations and feelings.
- School - The STAR teacher provides homebound instruction for 1½ hours daily and coordinates with the community school.
- Family Therapy - Discuss stressors in the home and the strengths each caregiver and child have to problem solve for solutions.
- Recreation/Activity Therapy - Teaches and strengthens skills that develop cooperation in group activities, improve health, and heighten self-esteem.
- Parent/Family Teaching - STAR staff will meet with parents and caregivers daily to review alternatives for dealing with behavior.
- Medication Information - The physician and nurse discuss all medications and explain how they will help.
- Goal Setting - Patients work on specific goals daily. Families are encouraged to continue to help with evening goal work.
Criteria for Admission
The child demonstrates behavioral problems serious enough to jeopardize placement and safety of self/others;
is emotionally and/or behaviorally disruptive to the extent that psychiatric diagnosis is applicable; exhibits
social and emotional problems that will have a serious, negative impact on the potential for positive development;
and needs intensive, highly structured, non-residential services to restore age appropriate, independent functioning.
Treatment Process
- Intake Assessment - Parents or guardians provide child’s history, including family, school, physical health and behavior. Other sources, such as daycares, are contacted (with the parent’s permission) for behavior patterns. The child is observed by staff.
- Admission - Multidisciplinary treatment team reviews the information collected about each child and decides on admission or makes appropriate referrals.
- Evaluation - Child is evaluated by multidisciplinary treatment team according to his/her response to the various activities and a list of strengths and needs is developed.
- Treatment Plan - Individual goals are developed.
