Here are some things you should consider when selecting a doctor for your child.
- When should I choose a pediatrician for my child?
-
It is usually a good idea to start thinking about a pediatrician for your child around your sixth
month of pregnancy. Many parents prefer to meet with pediatricians before the baby is born to
select the pediatrician that best meets their needs. Some offices even prefer a special
get-acquainted visit. It's important to remember that some physicians might not be accepting
new patients so you'll want to make sure before you set you mind on one physician. If you just
moved to the area it's a good idea to find a pediatrician as soon as possible. This way you are
prepared in the event of an emergency.
- Is my child's doctor board-certified?
-
A board-certified physician has completed training in an accredited residency program and has
passed national board exams in pediatrics or a specific specialty field. Some physicians are
board-eligible. This usually means that they have recently completed their residencies and have
not yet taken their board exams.
- Where does the physician admit patients?
-
Doctors often have privileges at more than one hospital. Make sure your child's physician is a
member of the medical staff at MUSC Children's Hospital to ensure that your child will have
access to the state's largest and most comprehensive pediatric healthcare center.
- Does the doctor have special interests or subspecialties?
-
If you child has a particular medical condition you may want to check around for a physician
that specializes in treating that condition. MUSC Parent Connection can help you locate a
physician with special interests.
- Is the physician in a group or solo practice?
-
Your personal preference may determine which type of practice is appropriate for your child's
needs.
- Is the practice location convenient?
-
This can be extremely important for busy, on-the-go parents. You may want to locate a physician
whose office is located near your home or office. Our physician directory lets you search by
location, so you can find a doctor that is convenient for you.
- Will they accept my insurance?
-
This is often the deciding factor for most parents. It is also an important consideration. Most
offices will process your claims for you and have an employee on staff that can help answer any
questions you may have. It is also a good idea to check with your insurance company before any
procedure is done. This way you can ensure that your insurance will cover the costs.
- What questions should I ask?
-
It's always a good idea to find out how the office operates. Who will you speak to regarding
routine medical information? Are sick and well patients separated in the waiting room? Will
your child always see the same doctor? What are the office hours? Do they offer weekend and
after-hours? What number do I call in the event of an emergency?
