About the Children's Heart Program
At the Children's Heart Program we are committed to excellence in patient care, research and education.
Patient Care
We provide innovative care to any patient (fetal life through adulthood) with congenital heart disease or cardiac conditions acquired during childhood. We provide easy access and state-of-the-art care to all referred patients through a coordinated network involving all the pediatric cardiologists in South Carolina. Patients may be in any locale, but efforts will concentrate on the residents of South Carolina and the Southeast.
Research
Research is directed toward understanding normal cardiac development and the causes of the congenital and acquired cardiac conditions of childhood through laboratory and clinical research. Particular effort and resources will be focused on identifying the processes that lead the heart to develop both normally and abnormally. From this understanding, new treatment strategies will be devised. These efforts will be funded from research grants, university support, donations and income from the provision of clinical care.
Education
We educate our patients, their families, the public, and our students to understand the causes and care of the childhood cardiac conditions. We provide pediatricians and residents-in-training with the information needed to identify, understand and provide care for patients with these conditions. We enable pediatric cardiology fellow trainees to become highly developed specialists who will continue the three-fold mission of the Children’s Heart Program. We disseminate the lessons learned from frontier clinical care and research to cardiac specialists throughout the world via publications, courses and symposia.
