And the winner is...
Just before Barry Waldrop drew the winning ticket, Mary Porter, designer, read an email she received from a Miss South Carolina pageant contestant's assistant. The e-mail asked for the winner to consider donating this winning design to Miss Greater Mauldin, Desiree Puglia, for the upcoming Miss South Carolina pageant. Present at the function, Anna Moore of Mount Pleasant heard her name called, as the winner of the "Yvonne Dress." Mary Porter House of Couture in Charleston and Barry Waldrop, the son of the late Yvonne Waldrop, sponsored the MUSC Children's Hospital benefit.

When Anna's name was drawn, without hesitation, she offered to donate this design to Desiree as part of her wardrobe for this Miss America Preliminary pageant, held July 4th in Spartanburg. Desiree has a personal platform with the Children's Miracle Network, of which MUSC is proudly a part, and actually was a "miracle baby." As Barry Waldrop stated during this emotional announcement, "the giving just keeps on giving."

New Pediatric Emergency Department
MUSC Children's Hospital is proud to announce that our new and improved Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) is scheduled to open in early November. The new space, located just across the main hospital corridor from our current location with our entrance off of Jonathan Lucas Street, will allow us to care for our patients in a larger, brighter and technologically superior environment. The new PED will feature 12 treatment rooms (increased from 9). The improved PED will allow us to triage patients more efficiently, reduce waiting times, streamline clinical care and sustain our excellent patient satisfaction ratings.

Child-Size Heart Treatment Saves 5-Year-Old's Life
Doctors at MUSC used a new German-built heart pump called the Berlin Heart to keep 5-year-old Joseph Greenwood alive as he awaited a heart transplant. Although the Berlin Heart has been approved for use throughout Europe, it has yet to be cleared for use in the United States. The FDA does allow the Berlin Heart to be used in extreme emergencies, for what it calls "compassionate release." It was what Joseph's doctors and family hoped for. Click here to learn more.
