A Year to Grow On
As we start an exciting 2006 in the Children's Hospital, it is worth remembering some of the changes we saw in 2005. In previous years, the percentage of admissions from the Children's Emergency Department averaged approximately 12 percent. That number has risen to an average of 30 percent, with the Emergency Department continuing to attract parents seeking specialized pediatric care for their children. With the implementation of the Quick Care Program, our overall wait times in the ED have become a benchmark for other systems. The excellent care and wonderful service in the department has catapulted the Children's ED to the 96th percentile for patient satisfaction.

We also opened the Medically Fragile Program and have quickly achieved our goal of enrolling 25 children in the first year. This program, along with the two others in the state, has been recognized as an innovator on the National Association of Children's Hospitals' web site. We expect it to be a national leader in the care of medically complex children.

The new Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit opened with an additional four beds and a wonderful atmosphere. Along with the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute this amazing new unit has been awarded the PACE award for architecture. New flooring and painting is complete in many of our patient rooms and the work continues. We are excited about the new colors that make our facility feel more comfortable for our families.

Our Family Advisory Council is now a year old and has become a very important part of our hospital. It has transitioned into an action-oriented group, with members sitting on planning committees like the new NICU construction committee. We have learned many things from this group and look forward to a training video that will be used for new staff, residents and faculty on how to communicate with families.

The year 2006 will be another exciting time as we move forward with many activities and plans. We are challenged to provide care to an increasing number of patients from the Charleston community, the state and beyond. We continue to prepare for this growth by planning another new Emergency Department, NICU and other ICU rooms. We continue to strive to provide the best care possible. Our children deserve it.
