Letter From Our Chair

Dr. Lyndon Key
L. Lyndon Key, MD
Professor and Chairman
Department of Pediatrics
Dear faculty, Children's Hospital staff and other friends,

Recently, Drs. Paul Darden, Bernie Maria, Carol Wagner and Inderjit Singh crafted a proposal to the NIH "to support the performance of research in children's health by bridging advanced training with research independence." This program allows pediatric sub-specialists who are within four years of completing their fellowship training and who are admitted to the "Child Health Research Career Development Award (CHCRA)" to develop skills to succeed as independent pediatric scientists. This new proposal will create a training program within the Darby Children's Research Institute (DCRI). The program will be a joint venture with the NICHD and the Department of Pediatrics. Starting this July, one faculty member will be chosen for a three year period to receive $75,000 in salary support for advanced research training, and $25,000 for supplies and equipment as a CHCRA/DCRI scholar. This support is intended to allow 75 percent of their time in research and research training.

ASCEND Foundation brings Gabe's Chemo Duck program to MUSC Children's Hospital

On March 14, the ASCEND Foundation, a Charleston-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to make ending cancer a national priority, brought a new program to the Children's Hospital - Gabe's Chemo Duck. This program is designed to help children with cancer better understand what is happening to them during their treatment and encourages healing through the power of play therapy. Chemo Duck is an innovative and unique communication tool that provides children with a stuffed animal, namely a duck, who have been diagnosed with cancer. In a gentle manner, Chemo Duck exposes children with cancer to their new life and encourages those surrounding the child to join ASCEND in their fight to put an end to cancer.

Researchers aim to improve sinusitis therapies for kids

Chronic sinusitis affects ten to 15 percent of kids in the US. "Sooner or later, most kids get sinusitis," explains Dr. Rodney Schlosser, a rhinologist and sinus specialist in MUSC's ENT department. But for a child with cystic fibrosis, it can mean much more than just a minor infection.

Cystic fibrosis is the most common genetic disease in Caucasians, affecting both children and adults. Nearly 100 percent of cystic fibrosis patients suffer from chronic sinusitis. "The disease affects the entire airway; children with the disease exhibit abnormal immune responses that are quite different from non-cystic fibrosis patients," explains Dr. Schlosser. "It negatively impacts their quality of life. For these kids, getting a sinus infection can lead to pulmonary or lung infections."

Searching for the Evidence: Finding a systematic review

Systematic reviews are generally considered to be the top of the evidence pyramid. They combine a thorough search of the literature with a tough analysis of the quality and validity of existing studies. Especially when containing the statistical power of a meta-analysis, a well-conducted systematic review provides you with the best possible overview of a specific clinical question.
