Three years ago we realized that we were making a lot of decisions regarding patient care without input from the families that had actual experiences in our facility. Knowing how critical their feedback could be, we decided to ask several of our patients' families about their experiences at MUSC Children's Hospital. We quickly realized how important connecting with these families is and developed a team to set up monthly meetings to discover how to increase patient and family satisfaction.
The Family Advisory Council is now very active in all aspects of the Children's Hospital. Almost all policies that focus on care for our patients are reviewed by this group. They have helped in the development of the first Family Resource Guide and much more. We are planning many changes at the hospital and members of this group have been involved in the design of new programs and/or units such as the new emergency department. Currently, the focus of the group is to work with our physician groups to include parents in physician rounding.
Most recently, the Family Advisory Council has been on trips to Washington DC with the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) to visit with local and national legislators to help them understand the needs of children's hospitals in our country. It is an exciting group that helps us in so many ways. If there is an interest in joining this team, please contact Sandra Oberman in our Child Life Department at (843) 792-7064.
