June 2008
Dear faculty, Children's Hospital staff and other friends,
Another graduation has taken place and a new group of doctors are on their way to residency. New faculty are appearing as they finish their fellowship. New programs are being developed and a large number of new faculty who have been recruited this year will be appearing soon. I would like to ask all of the members of our family at MUSC Children's Hospital to give them a warm welcome. This year has been fought with concern over facilities and strong support from the administration as we move toward "reclaiming" and increasing the facilities for the coming years. It is always good to be a pediatrician. As a whole, we are happy, friendly, and conscientious. I hope that we can keep the feel of a small faculty as we move toward a major expansion of talent and space.
It is not the facilities that make us great, but without them, we may not be able to attract the future specialists, generalists, nurses and allied health workers. I am very excited about the gains that have come our way this year. First, we have begun to see a plan to hang onto in improving the clinical facilities. We are also seeing within those who are beginning to get wind of new and better things for "our children." I am proud of what our Children's Hospital has done in the past seven years. We have built our faculty: adding two new gastroenterologists, two new nephrologists, a host of hospitalists, and a small army of emergency department physicians.
We have had great support from the Dean and have been supported, not just monetarily, but also with help in moving toward being a "free-standing" children's hospital. I am proud to have the honor to work for and with this wonderful Department of Pediatrics. This has been the year of new growth in our commitment to teaching. I believe that we have made innovations in teaching, in curricula, in research for residents, and for other trainees.
There is still work to be done, but the department is growing, is happy, and ready to meet the challenges in education, research, clinical care, and the courage that allows us to stand up for children.
