Second-grader starts fundraiser with half of a heart

Second-grader Mathew Chase has personality for miles. While he may not be able to run down the road of life, He’s not letting a little problem keep him from reaching big goals.
“I really want kids to live. I don’t want them to die or suffer from any kind of heart surgeries.”
Mathew was born with only half of his heart, the right side. It’s a condition known as hypo plastic heart.
Doctors had to paralyze him for the first five days of his life waiting to perform surgery to reroute veins and arteries so he could live. Two more surgeries later, Mathew wants to make sure other children have the same chance at survival.
“I thought about all of the kids at MUSC and I thought to myself, and I said to myself, hey maybe I should help the kids at MUSC a little harder. So I decided to make this fundraiser. That’s what I did.”
With the help of his teacher Allison Cataldo at Hunley Park Elementary, Mathew set out to raise $2,000 for the MUSC Children’s hospital during the month of February.
“Everyday I go around and collect the money and tally the money and then we make the graph,” said Cataldo. She was so moved by Mathew’s enthusiasm that she emailed News 2 to let us know about the project.
“We keep getting bigger hearts everyday,” Mathew added.
As of Monday morning, the school raised more than $1600, $400 shy of Mathew’s goal.
“I’ll make it,” he told News 2 without an ounce of doubt.
Now he has one question for you.
“Do you have a heart?” he asked.
Teachers say Mathew is a great example for others to follow because, even though only has half a heart, he whole-heartedly gives.
Mathew says he wants to be a preacher, teacher, astronaut and/or a pumpkin farmer when he grows up.
If you’d like to help Mathew Chase reach his goal, you can stop by Hunley Park Elementary on Dorchester Road and drop off your change or donation. The school will collect money until the end of the week.
