PCICU Family Information: Who's Who in the Children's Heart Center
There are many people involved in the care of your child. Some of the people you will meet are:
The Anesthesiologist - A doctor who has special skills caring for people during surgery. This doctor gives medicine to make your child sleep and monitors your child during surgery.
The Cardiology Fellow - A medical doctor who has completed his/her residency whose specific focus is pediatric cardiology.
The Cardiothoracic Resident - A surgical doctor who is specializing in cardiac surgery.
The Child Life Specialist - A person that specializes in helping sick children and their brothers and sisters deal with being ill, tests being done, and being in the hospital.
The Children's Rehabilitation Service Coordinator - A person that helps your family with financial issues.
The Clinical Associate - These are nursing assistants with special skills in the care of children with heart problems.
The Intensivist - A medical doctor who specializes in the care of patients in the intensive care unit.
The Interpreter Services - Spanish interpreters are available 24 hours per day. Other languages are available through a telephone service.
The Medical Student - A college graduate studying to become a doctor.
The Nurse Case Manager - Nurse who follows the care of your child during their hospital stay. They help with discharge planning.
The Occupational Therapist - A therapist specializing in assisting infants to eat.
The Pastoral Care Services - A Chaplin is available 24 hours per day to help with your spiritual needs. They also provide notary services, contact with military personnel through the Red Cross, and assistance with Advanced Directives, Living Wills, Healthcare Power of Attorney.
The Pediatric Cardiologist - A medical doctor who has special skills in the care of children with heart problems.
The Pediatric Cardiology Nurses - These nurses have special skills in the care of children with heart problems. They work in the intensive care unit, the step-down unit (7C), the Same Day Observation Unit and the catheterization lab.
The Pediatric Cardiology Nurse Practitioner - A nurse with advanced skills who works with the doctors and nurses in planning the care of your child.
The Pediatric Cardiology Social Worker - A social worker that is familiar with the supportive service available to children with heart defects. They also help with planning discharge from the hospital.
The Pediatric Cardio-vascular Surgeon - A doctor who performs heart surgery in children.
The Pediatric Dietician - A registered dietician who works with doctors and nurses to make sure your child is getting the right formula or foods to help him heal and grow.
The Pediatric Respiratory Therapist - These are registered respiratory therapists who are skilled in the management of airways and ventilators in children.
The Physical Therapist - A therapist specializing in assisting children with exercise and movement.
The Volunteers - These special people assist the nursing staff by keeping the children company. He/she can provide age appropriate toys and books. They also assist in helping siblings understand what is happening to their brother or sister.
